Grumeti Reserves builds 150m/-environmental education centre
Posted: Wednesday January 16, 2008 5:08 PM BT
Singita Grumeti Reserves, which is part of the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem in Serengeti District, Mara Region, is constructing a 150m/-Environmental Education Centre at Makundusi to train neighbouring villagers on environmental conservation,
Brian Harris, managing director of Singita Grumeti Fund, told visiting journalists here recently that the centre,
whose construction is expected to be completed in March, next year, would provide training on environmental management to villagers from Serengeti and Bunda districts. He said 12 youths, six boys and six girls, from neighbouring villages would be selected to undergo the course for five days on a weekly basis. After the training, the 12 boys and girls would conduct similar courses for fellow Villagers to enlighten them on the need to protect the environment. Singita Grumeti Reserves, founded in 2003, is home to millions of wildlife including 40 species of herbivores, 25 species of large carnivores and 400 species of birds with a high concentration of raptors. Harris said the training would be carried out throughout the year until all villages in the area are covered so that the local population understands the technicalities of preserving wildlife and other natural resources. "The idea behind this programme is to equip the villagers with relevant information on wildlife conservation which is the lifeline of this area's activities," he said, adding that in five years or so to come, everybody would be aware of his responsibilities. However, Harris said implementation of the programme is part of the Reserves commitment to improving the welfare of the people by empowering the neighbours for a sustainable future where it's committed to executing a number of conservation and community projects in the areas surrounding the lodges. |
