Themi River Now a Major Health Threat
Posted: Wednesday May 06, 2009 5:26 AM BT
Arusha - Grazing of livestock along Themi river is not only a threat to the environment but also to the health of people living downstream.
Speaking on different occasions, residents of the area said that although people have been advised to maintain their surroundings for the benefit of their health, there have been uncontrolled grazing of livestock, particularly pigs, along the banks of Themi River. Many people use water from the river for domestic purposes. Some of the livestock keepers have directed animal sludge to the river.

The Acting Village Executive Officer, Ndesakura Mwenera told this reporter that she was aware of the problem and efforts had been taken to educate people on the hazards of polluting the river.

Sekei Ward is bordering Arumeru District and has no dumping ground. Most of the garbage is disposed of along the Themi River.

The Municipal Director, Mr. Raphael Mbunda told this reporter that he would follow-up the matter to ensure that the problem is solved.
