Posted: Friday February 22, 2008 9:46 PM BT
This year's Kilimanjaro Marathon has attracted 306 foreign runners, representing a 15 per cent increase from last year's entries. "The event promises to be bigger, better and far reaching than ever," Tanzania Breweries Limited (TBL) information and communication officer Fimbo Butala told reporters yesterday.
He said the United States would field the largest contingent, followed by Britain.
"The US will field 61 runners, while 45 will come from Britain," Butala said. Other countries which have confirmed participation in the event include Canada which will field 42 athletes, South Africa and Kenya which will be represented by 35 runners each. The rest are Sweden (40), Australia (18), Hungary (7), Germany (5), Uganda (4), Zambia and Morocco (3 each), Swaziland, Nigeria and Malawi (2 each). The Kilimanjaro Marathon is set for March 2 in Moshi and will be held concurrently with the Half-marathon and 5km Fun Run. Bitala attributed the huge foreign participation to the popularity, which the race has gained over the last five years. "The work done by South Africa's Wild Frontiers and Tanzania Tourist Board in inviting athletes from across the world has greatly paid off," he said. "Local .entries are also expected to increase due to road shows conducted around the country," he added. Butala said under the instructions of the world athletics governing body IAAF, all the participants would undergo doping test "This will be the third time doping test is conducted since the race was introduced five years ago," he said. TBL, through their Kilimanjaro Premium Lager brand, are the main sponsors of the Kilimanjaro Marathon, while the Half-marathon and 5km Fun Run are sponsored by Air Tanzania and Vodacom Tanzania Limited respectively; Others are CFAO DT Dobie, Tanga Cement, Goodyear Tyres, Tanzanite One, Shoprite, KK Security, Holiday Inn, Keys Hotel, Standard Chartered Band and Kilimanjaro and Dasani Water.
