Integrated tourism law standing by

The new Tourism Act (2008) is billed by stakeholders as having potential to guide the industry to even greater heights. Geofrey Tengeneza, Senior Public Information Officer at the Tanzania Tourist Board (TTB) said this week that new Act would replace previously existing two separate Acts of Hotel Act and Tourism Agency License Authority (TALA) Act.

He said the new legislation was so designed to promote home-based tourist attractions, hotels, tour operations and business for travel agencies.

"The unified Act will guide us to promote growth of tourism sector in the country," he said.

The President is said to have already accented to the law, whose rules and regulations would even see interests of important stakeholders such as tour guides and porters being significantly taken care of.

Training workshops for the Ministry and TTB`s officials focusing on the basics of the new law are well on track, he said.

At one level, the new Act provides for the establishment of a technical advisory committee that would be responsible for advising the Minister on issues related to the management and regulation of tourism facilities and activities, including designated tourism facilities and activities, tourism operations and any other functions assigned to it.

In addition, the technical committee would also be issuing licenses, grading of tourism facilities, registration of tourism facilities and related activities.
