Water Flows in Maasai Villages After London Marathon
Posted: Friday June 19, 2009 5:54 AM BT
By Elisha Mayallah
Arusha - The six Maasai youth who took part in the Flora London Marathon last year in April, have prided themselves two weeks ago when the borehole of the elusive water produced results. Last year they went to run and raise money in London that would be used to supply water for the village of Eluai and Emerete both in Monduli Juu North of Tanzania.
The supply of water in the two villages has left a lot of surprises for residents of Eluai and Emerete. "Children who grew up drinking dam water (dirty water) when served with freshwater recently refused to take it," said Mr. Berry Bales of the Meserani Snake Park who is a team member in the water project. They could not imagine what looked colour less and clean was water they were missing for years! It took time to convince the children to accept and drink the clean water.

Initially the six warriors went to run and raise funds for a water project to serve the village of Eluai, however, realities have dictated terms and eventually the water project team decided to extend the project to cover the neigbouring village of Emerete. Mr. Bales said villagers of Eluai had been drawing water from a water dam located in Emerete, so they found reasons to extend the project to benefit the neigbours.

The Greenforce, a UK based not-for profit company operating in Tanzania who organized for the Maasai youth to run in the Flora London Marathon and raised funds for the water project, is expected to release another part of payment to finish the awaiting installations of water reservoir to schools in the two villages.
