Tanzanians urged to visit National Parks

Tanzanians are said to spend more money on luxury, especially alcohol than for educational programmes. Mr. Ahmed Mbugi, an outreach programme manager with the Kilimanjaro National Park, one of the leading tourist attractions in the country, said Kinapa was attracting more foreigners than local tourists.
He said claims that visiting national parks was too expensive was misleading because entry fees were lower for domestic tourists compared to foreigners.

He added that a tour to national parks and other tourist attractions was generally affordable to middle income groups including employees in the public and private sectors.

"The problem is that some people consider touring national parks as wastage of money when the same people spend a lot of money on beer," he lamented.

Mr. Mbugi who was speaking to Moshi Technical College students, called on Tanzanians to cultivate a culture of visiting national parks to know the country's natural heritage.
The official said it was unfortunate that many people think the only way to refresh their minds was by drinking beer in bars.
