Pro-Poor Tourism Can Reduce Poverty

Kigali - Promotion of pro-poor tourism can help reduce poverty in the region, the Netherlands Development Organisation (SNV) country director for Rwanda, Jean de Matha Ouedraogo, has said. uedraogo said if such initiatives were encouraged, the poor would increase their income through direct and indirect linkages to the sector, adding that SNV had started programmes to boost poor people's income.

"Apart from employment, pro-poor tourism makes the poor became tourism actors by supplying food and services to the sector," Ouedraogo said.

He added: "Hotels have benefited from the sector for a long time, while the local communities have become poorer despite the sector's increasing growth."

Ouedraogo was speaking at the opening of SNV Rwanda clients-partners day at Novotel Hotel in Kigali on Friday. SNV operates in 33 countries worldwide.

Meanwhile, 16 bee-keepers and four extension workers from Bunyangabo, Kabarole and Kamwenge districts have ended a four-day study tour sponsored SNV Rwanda. Desire Mushumba, the delegation's leader, said the tour was inspirational, adding that their Ugandan counterparts excelled in market information and quality of products.
