Mwangunga: Reduce vehicles into Ngorongoro Crater
By Marc Nkwame

The number of vehicles that descend into the Ngorongoro crater will soon be cut down, Natural Resources and Tourism Minister, Mrs. Shamsa Mwangunga, said here on Wednesday.

Mrs. Mwangunga said this during her tour of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority (NCAA).

"I have already talked to officials to see ways of controlling the traffic within the crater's environment 4 and wildlife," she said.

At the moment the number of vehicles going down the crater on daily basis ranges between 200 and 400 depending on the season of tourism.

As the season picks up, both Ngorongoro area and the crater become busy with tourists and vehicles visiting the world's largest caldera located 180 kms west of Arusha municipality.

She said there were: also plans to reduce the number of livestock taken for grazing within the crater by pastoralists. Mr. Bernard Murunya, the acting conservator, said NCAA would start to buy salt and other cattle nutrients this financial year for local livestock keepers to discourage them from taking the animals into the crater.

Mr. Murunya said 25m/-has been allocated for the purpose.
