Posted: Saturday September 20, 2008 7:01 AM BT
The government has challenged Mweka Wildlife Training and Management College to excel in research on wildlife in order to improve the tourism sector among East African Community (EAC) countries and the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC).
Natural Resources and Tourism minister Shamsa Mwangunga threw the challenge recently when launching the college's board in Moshi.
She said the college had to ensure that it improved its curriculum on tourism with the aim of utilizing national resources for raising the national income. Launching the board on behalf of the minister, Deputy Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism Ezekiel Maige named Prof. Feetham Banyikwa as its chairman while other members included the ministry's permanent secretary, Blandina Nyomi, Faidha Bakari and Richard Ndassa and Dr Suleimain Mohamed. Others are Ugandan Director for Wildlife Authority Wafula Mapesa, Kenyan Director for Wildlife Prof, Geogre Otiang\'a Owiti and Dr Nyamajeje Weggoro. Maige mentioned others as a representative for the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) in the country, Dr Hermann Mwageni; National Parks director Gerald Bigurube, Erasmus Tarimo and the college's principal, Emannuel Severre. Earlier, Severre said that the college, which was founded 40 years ago, boasted of a total of 3,800 graduates who had gone through it from 50 countries throughout the world. "All of these have been awarded various certificates in wildlife training and management," he said. He added that the college had all along been the only entity disseminating training on wildlife management, particularly for Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Malawi, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Sudan and Botswana, adding that the number of trainees had surged from 80 to 307 this year. He said the college is keen to start using French and Spanish in its curriculum so as to improve the tourism sector and brace for a huge influx of tourists from different parts of the world.
