The Singita Grumeti Reserves lodges based in Serengeti Game reserve had been listed as 16th best in the world's 100 hotels for 2009, America's leading 'Travel and Leisure' magazine has published.
'Travel and Leisure magazine which is the leading magazine in the tourist industry and respected by worldwide stakehold¬ers/also listed Kirawira camp in Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater Lodge which are also in the list of the best of the best 100 hotels.
Grumeti Reserves lodges opened its doors to customers in 2004/05 and since then had been scooping various international awards in tourism industry including Global Vision Awards 2006 (USA) and Luxury Lodge Ecotourism (T) 2007. According to a statement of Singita Grumeti Reserves, the listing will attract more tourists of the high calibre from all over the world and it shows that Tanzania tourism industry was getting recognition. "These awards are globally renowned and underline what it is to be the amongst the best of the best I offer my congratulations to each and every person in the company for achieving this amazing result where we can proudly hold up our heads amongst some of the world's best lodges and hotels. "This really is a world class result and every single member of staff can be very proud of this fantastic achievement," commented Mr Graham Ledger, Managing Director of Singita Grumeti Reserves. The statement further said that Grumeti Reserves was among few luxury joints in East and Central Africa which takes conservation seriously by allowing few customers. As noted, all three lodges which had been awarded come from tourism's prime areas of Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater which needs the maximum protection as President Jakaya Kikwete cautioned during the opening of Bilila lodge. "I am told a study done by Hart Howerton in 2006 had advised that the Serengeti can safely accommodate another 10 hotels and identified the suitable sites. "My advice to TANAPA and the Ministry of Tourism and Natural Resources are two things. First, go slowly in implementing the study. "The second thing 1 would like to advise is to insist on high class hotels and lodges to be built in the park. "Don't allow low class hotels to be built at these designated places inside the park. The Serengeti is a prime property; its hotels must reflect that character. After all, this is what the policy of low volume and high value tourism means," he said. Bilila lodge is owned by Kempinski and was opened by the president on July 10. Daily News Monday July 20, 2009
