Kilimanjaro makes it into ‘New World Wonders’ finals

Mount Kilimanjaro has successfully entered the final round in the global race for the next new Natural Wonders of the World.It was announced on Tuesday at the New7Wonders headquarters in Zurich, that Africa's highest peak at 5896 meters and Tanzania’s symbol of independence has just become one of the 28 Official Finalist Candidates in the global election of the Official New7Wonders of Nature.
Kilimanjaro, with its three volcanic cones, Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira, is an inactive stratovolcano in north-eastern Tanzania rising 4,600 m (15,100 ft) from its base (and approximately 5,100 m (16,700 ft) from the plains near Moshi), and is additionally the highest peak in Africa at 5,892 metres (19,331 ft), providing a dramatic view of the surrounding plains.
A statement from New Seven World Wonders as dispatched by communication officer, Tia Viering indicated that from this week on to the next two years, Kilimanjaro will remain in the eyes of entire world not only as a tourism destination but a new global wonder to reckon with.

The 21 finalists will then be put to popular vote a hectic exercise that will endure the next 24 months. The final declaration of the New 'Seven Wonders of Nature' will be in 2011

The Tanzania flagship tourism feature, regularly mentioned alongside Mount Everest has managed to trash the latter which is no longer in the finalists' lineup. Kilimanjaro is also one of only two features from Africa that has made it into the final leg of the race, the other being the Cape Town based, Table Mountain of South Africa.

The announcement was made by Prof. Dr. Federico Mayor, President of the New7Wonders Panel of Experts, and Bernard Weber, Founder and President of New7Wonders.

"Congratulations to the supporters of Mt. Kilimanjaro from around the world for their passionate, inspiring work in bringing it up from over 440 participants into this elite finalist group of just 28," said Weber.

"This is an extraordinary achievement and the eyes of the planet will be upon Kilimanjaro and Tanzania for the next 2 years. We look forward to an exciting and record-breaking final race, with the whole world coming together to choose the Official New seven wonders of Nature."

"These seven new locations will become part of Global Memory forever," he added.

In addition to Panel President Prof. Dr. Federico Mayor, the members of the N7W Panel of Experts are: Dr. John Francis a U.S.; environmentalist, social activist, author and UN Goodwill Ambassador to the World's Grassroots Communities and Simon King a Kenyan and UK documentary filmmaker.

Others are Ana Paula Tavares a Brazil and American senior vice president and vice president of development, the Rainforest Alliance, Bernard Weber Canadian and Switzerland; global voting campaign expert, photographer, filmmaker and author, Prof. Jan Zima a Czech Republic; biodiversity scientist and Rex Weyler a Canadian environmental journalist, activist and founder of Greenpeace.

Its position in the Seven New World wonders of Nature Mount Kilimanjaro stand to boost its tourism traffic tenfold, the mountain boasts an average of 25,000 climbers every year earning the country close to Tshs. 30 billion last year alone.
